Reaching those milestones
16th June 2023
We achieved two very important milestones recently as far as the Surrey Maths School was concerned. Just before half-term the long-awaited ‘change of use’ was agreed which gives us the go ahead to open the school in September 2024. For those of you who have been following the development of this project for many years, I know you will understand the significance of this and what a milestone has been passed.
The second notable development was appointing the founding Head of School. I was delighted that we received significant interest in the role and we were able to undertake a selection process last week. The result of this was we appointed Co-Heads of School both of whom currently work at Kings College Maths School. Not only do they bring excellent experience and knowledge of both maths and physics, they also share our vision to increase the proportion of girls studying STEM subjects and are firmly committed to high quality outreach to schools across our region. This will bring so much benefit to all LPAT schools.
This selection process involved trustees and members of the SMS Steering Group. Throughout the process I was once again struck by the generosity of so many people who regularly volunteer in supporting our trust and schools in a range of governance roles. I am writing this on the eve of the Annual Governor’s Conference which will take place tomorrow at Boxgrove School. This evening provides a tremendous opportunity for governors from across our schools to meet together, to learn together and to share their commitment to supporting school leaders and teachers to bring about the best outcomes for our young people. In many cases, this brings no tangible benefit to themselves but is rooted in community and in the spirit of service.
We thank you for your generosity and service.
