Looking to the future

4th October 2024

As we start a fresh academic year, it gives many of us cause for reflection, while looking forwards to the 'new'.

Learning Partners was created through the active collaboration across Guildford of a number of trustees, governors and school leaders. Our ethos since then has very much been to foster partnership across the trust, sharing strategies, resources and support so we can innovate and adapt more effectively. World Teachers' Day, celebrated globally on the 5th October, serves as a platform to recognise the crucial role educators play in shaping tomorrow's generations. This year’s theme, “Valuing Teacher Voices: Towards a New Social Contract for Education,” emphasises the importance of listening to and empowering teachers within and across the education landscape. As we navigate the complexities of the modern world, a smart and robust education, fostering collaboration and growth within the teaching community is paramount.

We don't just see teachers as transmitters of knowledge; you are the fuel in the engine of our system. Your insights and experiences drive meaningful change, ensuring that educational practices meet the specific needs of our students. This is why we encourage teachers to be actively involved in key activities and processes that affect our classrooms and wider communities - to help create an environment that prioritises and values collaboration. There are so many excellent examples of active and beneficial collaboration working well today, including DSLs, SEND and all of our main curriculum areas. However, there is always the opportunity to do more, working to raise the bar of professional development and student outcomes.

Very sadly, Anne Turner, a fellow trustee, Chair of the Education Committee and former headteacher of Fullbrook School unexpectedly passed away during the summer break. Anne was a powerful advocate for the voice of our heads and wider teaching staff and as we celebrate World Teachers' Day, I am certain that Anne would have written this article, supporting our teachers and encouraging you to elevate your voices. Together we can create the educational landscape that students and teachers in our trust deserve, where your expertise and contributions sit at the heart of all that we do.

Looking back over the past few years, it is clear that we are becoming better at learning from each other, getting stronger together.
