Surrey Maths School Celebrates Milestone Opening
23rd October 2024
In early October, Surrey Maths School (SuMS) marked its official opening at its temporary site on the Kings College campus, Guildford. As the school awaits the completion of its state-of-the-art facility, staff, headteachers, governors, students, and parents/carers gathered to celebrate the school’s launch. This event, attended by the CEOs of Learning Partners Academy Trust and the U-Maths Network, symbolises the start of an exciting chapter for Surrey Maths School and its community.
SuMS opened its doors for the first time on September 5, admitting 85 students drawn from 66 schools across Surrey and its adjoining region. This specialist Maths School for 16-19 year olds joins a national network of 7 established Maths Schools across the country and provides a space where the best young mathematicians can thrive.
In partnership with the University of Surrey, SuMS delivers an innovative, stimulating and world-class curriculum, including A Level courses and the SuMS Project Qualification, designed to enhance students' individual and group problem-solving skills.
Over the summer, significant building works were undertaken at Kings College Guildford to refurbish and redecorate a dedicated, temporary area for SuMS. The start of the academic year has been a success, students have engaged in STEM-based studies, formed strong relationships, and participated in a residential trip to Cuffley, Hertfordshire, where they took part in outdoor activities to build teamwork and collaboration.
Headteachers Nora Kettleborough and Sahar Shillabeer said, “We are thrilled to welcome 85 students into our first cohort of students at Surrey Maths School. They bring with them the most wonderful energy for all things mathematical sciences, and are establishing a culture of kindness and curiosity in all that they do. There are exciting times ahead for SuMS as this dream becomes a reality!”
As a part of Learning Partners Academy Trust, Surrey Maths School benefits from the strength of a growing multi-academy trust that includes 5 secondary schools, the specialist maths school, six all-through primary schools, two junior schools, and two infant and nursery schools. While Learning Partners provides robust central support, it also encourages each school to celebrate its unique individual strengths, ensuring that every child receives the best possible educational experience.
Speaking at the event, Jack Mayhew, CEO of Learning Partners Academy Trust, said: "The opening of SuMS at Kings College is a significant moment for us. While this is just the beginning, we are confident that the school will continue to grow and thrive, both here and in its future home. We are proud to support its development and excited to see the positive impact it will have on students’ mathematical education.”
Surrey Maths School’s opening marks a crucial moment in its journey, as it builds a strong foundation for future success within Learning Partners Academy Trust.
